Zanzibari lady of consequence
The Humphrey Winterton Collection of East African photographs is comprised of about 6,500 photographs organized in 75 primary collections of separate albums, scrapbooks or loose collections. Primary collections range from a single photograph to a set of several photograph albums plus envelopes of loose photographs.

The photographs depict a variety of social scenes at different locales, including the Sultan's palace. All captions have been supplied for the inventory.

Scenes from Zanzibar and surrounding areas, depicting British Foreign Office and naval personnel in casual and official situations. Many photographs depict outings to nearby villages on Zanzibar and Pemba Islands. The album includes several photographs of the Sultan and formal portraits of British navel officers, Foreign Office, and their wives.

Photographs and postcards depicting Zanzibar, Ripon Falls in Uganda, Mombasa, Dar es Salaam, and Aden, plus a few from Egypt and Rome. Most photographs are captioned in ink, but the original captions differ somewhat from those recorded in the inventory, as noted. In addition, some captions have been amended or corrected in pencil. These additions and corrections have been noted as well.
